Meeting Notes from January 19, 2009

            MoArk Christian Ed Board Meeting

Jan 19, 2009 @ 6:00 p.m. Hitt's Chapel GBC

Members Present:  Kent Luke (President); Bryan Johnson (Clerk/Treasurer); Steve McElwrath; Ryan Mason; Chuck Provance and Shawn Parker.  Jeff Smart emailed and was unable to attend.

The meeting was opened by Kent Luke with a review as to where we are in terms of the March 2009 CE Workshop planned with Dr. Larry McKain.

The contract has been signed and ½ payment has been made with the next one due by March 1, 2009.  ($625.00) He will be bringing his own video projector for the PowerPoint Presentation and He will stay with his brother in Dexter, MO and be driving from there to the seminar.  I expect to receive from Larry a brochure to be printed and used during the seminar. The Food and follow up on the Advertisement is all that's left.

We have the letters prepared to go to the pastors and they will be sent this week.  That will be followed up with a phone call from one of the members of the CE Board as assigned to make sure that they received the letter and to let them know that we will be checking back in the middle of February to get a final count for the food.  We will then send out emails to those of whom we have emails for and place an advertisement with a flyer that can be forwarded to the pastor's email addresses to help promote the event.  We will follow that up with a Postcard near the same time we do the follow-up calls.

Summary:

1.    Original letters mailed out to Pastors

2.    Phone call by board members

3.    Email with attachment they can forward to others

4.    Postcard reminder

5.    2nd phone call to verify count to pass on to those preparing the food

The Food arrangements were discussed with the possibilities of whom we can use to cater food in.  We thought of WalMart in Kennett, MO or Paragould, AR, (both equal distance to the Rector Church), we discussed a local restaurant, (Bowden's Family Restaurant), or Harp's Grocery Store if they cater or even Hardee's.

Bryan will pick up plates, cups and sodas from Sam's Club or WalMart  for the March 7th Seminar.  Bryan will contact Marston Carpenter, the pastor of the Rector Church as to his suggestion and verification of possible places to cater and the cost involved.

We will follow up by email in terms of the progress of each phrase and then meet again on the day of the Seminar (March 7) for evaluation and further discussion.

Two areas we need to follow up with:  Resources to send home with the folks and a questionnaire to have filled out.

*************************************************************************************

We began a discussion on possibly doing a more local workshop in the fall of the year to address other issues of support to our local churches.

A couple of suggestions were thrown out:

·        Technology in the local church

·        Communicating with the Spiritually Illiterate.  A title mentioned that we may use is: "Breaking Through The Noise" and address how the church can reach out and minister to the ages that are dropping out of church including but not exclusive to the college kids and the 30+ year olds who are not relating to the local church and vice-versa.

o       The discussion was very lively with lots input as to the need.  We discussed going from the "Awareness" of the need, to "Communicating" the gospel message to address the need in a manner that may be heard.

o       There are so many "things" crying out for attention, how can the church put up its proverbial hand and say, "Hey, we're here and we've got something to say that you need."  The competition for attention of overwhelming, so how can we compete?

o       We will use local people (from our denomination and outside of it) who have successfully reached out in these areas who can help us along.

NEXT MEETING:  March 7, 2009 @ First GBC of Rector.
